Welcome to the LiveJournal of HL Vadas Ersebet (me in SCA land)and the reliable borrowed archer-horse Ace, aka King's Royal Mist, Omega, the good sport/patient teacher, and Yanarra the older, yet speedy Arab! (For someone who doesn't own a horse, I have a lot of horses!)
On January 20, 2003, I took up archery. Presently, I shoot a yew long bow, a bamboo recurve, and a Magyar style horsebow. I compete in the SCA and do well, earning four championships. I was also a gold medalist in the Oregon State Games in 2004. In June 2009, I became a Yeoman to Her Excellency, Baroness Jill of Three Mountains.
As a formerly unathletic person, I was interested in how I completed this turnaround from intellectual couch potato to this sanctimonious philosopher-athlete type. ;>) I decided to document this turnaround in a work-in-progress I called The Archer Memoirs.
As this was started long after I started learning archery, I attempted to recapture the memories by reviewing old journal entries and email. Unfortunately, the limitations became immediately obvious. I could recount the factual elements of my evolution and my current love of the sport and skill, but the initial feeling and passion as I mastered the craft was long gone. Feeling and passion as one finds a craft to their talent arise at the moment; they are remembered but their intensity dwindles. As such, the Archer Memoirs felt flat. It was heartbreaking, but the project was never going to be what I wished for it.
When I took up horsemanship in April 2006, I decided I would not repeat that mistake. Therefore, I started this new writing project: The Horse Archer Diaries. This journal will trace my progress, pit falls, and triumphs as I learn horsemanship and riding with the end goal of me becoming a horseback archer much like my Magyar ancesters.
This will cover a variety of topics including my riding lessons, archery practices, research, book reviews and other items that become relevent as time moves on. I will also elaborate on relevant archery or tailoring-related projects. Most entries will be public with a few friends-only. Consider this the dress diary of the medieval martial arts student. :)
All entries will be covered by U.S. federal copyright protection and I request that they are not cross-posted or distributed without my express consent.
Thank you for stopping by for a look.
